CHHF wins group Gatekeeper Award

TRUSSVILLE – The Cahaba Homestead Heritage Foundation has won the Trussville Area Chamber of Commerce’s group Ned and Goldie Paine Memorial Gatekeeper Award for 2023.

The group was named the winner Monday, Jan. 29, 2024, at “Trussville’s Toast of the Town: Celebrating Trussville’s Best” event at Corbeau Wine Bar. One nominator wrote about the recently dedicated three stone gateways in Trussville’s Cahaba Project as a reason.

“The fundraising for the gateways took many hours meeting with individuals, businesses, influencers, federal, state, county, and city officials. These efforts resulted in approval and funding from the city as well.”

Another nominator wrote about how the group has brought Trussville’s history into the 21st century.

“The CHHF for the past 3 years has well educated Trussville citizens on the rich history of the city’s center, the Cahaba Project. The CHHF’s mission is all about education, outreach, and civic involvement.”

CHHF officers include President Amy Peterson O’Brien, Secretary Cathy Freeman, Treasurer Meg Ward, and Historian Gary Lloyd.

One of the nominations mentioned O’Brien in particular.

“She organized and coordinated the first annual Heritage Days,” the nominator wrote. “This four-day event brought awareness of our heritage. Funds were raised through individuals, businesses, and a state tourism grant.”

Since 1966, the Gatekeeper awards have honored outstanding service to the Trussville community. Nominations for individuals and groups are accepted.
